The Five First Saturday Devotion traces its origin to the apparitions at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. Between May and October of that year, Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children—Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto—on the thirteenth day of each month. However, the specific request for the Five First Saturday Devotion came later, on December 10, 1925, when Our Lady appeared to Sister Lúcia at the Dorothean Sisters’ convent in Pontevedra, Spain. Consequently, the Church has embraced this devotion as an essential element of the Fatima message.

During that pivotal 1925 apparition, the Child Jesus appeared first, standing on a luminous cloud beside His Mother. The second covers attacks on her perpetual virginity.
The third offense includes blasphemies against her divine maternity, particularly the refusal to accept her as Mother of all peoples. The fourth concerns those who deliberately instill indifference, contempt, or even hatred toward Mary in the hearts of children. Finally, the fifth offense encompasses direct insults against her sacred images. Therefore, each First Saturday can be offered specifically for one of these offenses, helping to remove the thorns that pierce Our Lady’s Heart.
The Magnificent Promise of the Five First Saturday Devotion
The promises attached to the Five First Saturday Devotion are extraordinary in their scope and mercy. Our Lady pledged to assist at the hour of death with all graces necessary for salvation. Additionally, she assured devotees that her Immaculate Heart would ultimately triumph. This triumph extends beyond individual souls to the entire world. In fact, Sister Lúcia later emphasized that whether the world experiences war or peace depends largely on the practice of this devotion, alongside the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart.
Our Lord himself confirmed the value of this practice. He told Sister Lúcia that souls who complete the Five First Saturday Devotion with fervor and genuine reparation please Him more than those who make fifteen Saturdays in a tepid manner. Furthermore, he relaxed certain requirements to make the devotion accessible. For instance, if someone forgets to offer Confession beforehand, the next Confession may be offered as reparation.
