Novena to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux: A Nine-Day Prayer for the Little Way
The Catholic Church celebrates Saint Therese of Lisieux every year on the first of October, remembering her short yet radiant life. Born Marie Françoise Thérèse Martin in 1873, within the French town of Alençon, she grew up amid deep devotion and family love. Her parents, Louis and Zélie Martin, were later canonised themselves, reflecting the extraordinary holiness woven throughout her entire household. Sadly, Thérèse lost her mother at just four years old, an early grief that shaped her tender, sensitive spirit considerably. Nevertheless, she felt drawn toward Carmelite life from childhood, eventually entering the Lisieux convent at only fifteen. There, hidden from public view, she quietly practised what she later called her Little Way of spiritual childhood.
This approach emphasised complete trust in God’s love, alongside performing ordinary tasks with extraordinary tenderness and care. Rather than pursuing dramatic sacrifices, Thérèse found holiness within small gestures, patient smiles and quiet acts of kindness. Her superiors eventually asked her to record these reflections, producing the now-famous autobiography titled “The Story of a Soul.” Published shortly after her death, this humble book spread rapidly across the world, touching millions of ordinary readers. Thérèse died from tuberculosis in 1897, at just twenty-four years old, following considerable physical suffering. Pope Pius the Eleventh canonised her in 1925, and Pope John Paul the Second later declared her a Doctor of the Church in 1997.
