Novena to Saint Pio: A Nine-Day Prayer to Padre Pio for Healing and Peace
The Catholic Church honours Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, widely known as Padre Pio, every year on the September 23. Believers turn to this novena because his own life overflowed with suffering, patience and quiet miracles. Since he bore the wounds of Christ for fifty years, many faithful trust his intercession during their own seasons of pain. Born Francesco Forgione in 1887, within the small Italian village of Pietrelcina, Padre Pio grew up among seven siblings in a devout farming family. From childhood, he reportedly experienced visions and felt strongly drawn toward religious life. Consequently, he entered the Capuchin Franciscan novitiate at just fifteen years old, taking the name Pio in honour of an earlier pope. He was ordained a priest in 1910, after years of frail health and demanding study. Then, on September 20, 1918, everything changed while he knelt praying before a crucifix. He suddenly received the stigmata, the visible wounds of Christ’s crucifixion, upon his hands, feet and side.
Remarkably, these wounds remained open and bleeding for the next fifty years, yet doctors could never identify any natural cause. Many witnesses also described the blood as carrying a distinct floral fragrance, adding further mystery to his story. Meanwhile, Padre Pio spent up to sixteen hours daily hearing confessions, drawing enormous crowds despite his own preference for quiet obscurity. In 1956, he founded a hospital called the House for the Relief of Suffering, which continues serving thousands each year. He died on the twenty-third of September 1968, and Pope John Paul the Second later canonised him in 2002.
