Nine Days of Prayer and Marian Devotion
The Novena to Our Lady of the Rosary is a 9-day Catholic prayer devotion honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title, Our Lady of the Rosary. Catholics turn to Mary because she is the Mother of Jesus Christ and a model of faithful discipleship. Through her example and intercession, the faithful are encouraged to draw closer to her Son.
The Holy Rosary holds a special place in Catholic prayer. By repeating the Hail Mary while meditating on the mysteries of Christ’s life, death and Resurrection, Catholics contemplate the Gospel with Mary. The Rosary therefore remains a profoundly Christ-centred devotion.
The Church celebrates the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7. The feast has a historical connection with the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 and the prayer of the Rosary. Over the centuries, successive popes have encouraged Catholics to pray the Rosary, particularly for peace, families and the needs of the Church.
This novena may be prayed in preparation for October 7 or at any other time of the year. You may offer it for your family, peace in the world, conversion, vocations, protection, healing, spiritual growth or a personal intention known to God.
As you begin, place your confidence in God. Ask Our Lady of the Rosary to accompany you in prayer and to lead you ever more deeply to Jesus Christ.
How to Pray the Novena to Our Lady of the Rosary
Each day begins with the Sign of the Cross, followed by a Marian reflection, a short prayer, three Hail Marys and one Glory Be.
After the prayers, pause quietly and present your personal intention to God through the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary.
If possible, pray the Rosary during these nine days as well. Because the Church teaches that the Rosary is a prayer centred on the mysteries of Christ, and its meditation can help the faithful contemplate the Gospel with Mary.
First Day — Humility
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.” — Luke 1:46–47
Reflection
Mary’s humility shines throughout her life. When the angel Gabriel announced that she would become the mother of the Saviour, she did not seek honour for herself. She called herself the handmaid of the Lord and accepted God’s will. Her humility was not weakness. It was the freedom to place God above herself. The Rosary repeatedly brings us back to this humble obedience, because in the Annunciation, the Visitation and the Nativity, we see Mary allowing God’s plan unfolding through her. Therefore, we too are called to receive God’s gifts with gratitude and to surrender our plans to His wisdom. So true humility does not diminish us. It helps us recognise that everything good comes from God. Through Mary’s intercession, may we learn to serve without seeking praise and to accept God’s will with a faithful heart.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, humble Mother of Jesus, teach us to place God before ourselves. Help us to surrender our pride, acknowledge our need for God’s grace and serve others with a humble heart. May your example lead us closer to Jesus and help us accept His will in our lives. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father
Three Hail Marys
Glory Be to the Father
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Second Day — Faith
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” — Luke 1:45
Reflection
Mary believed before she understood. When Angel Gabriel spoke of a child born by the power of the Holy Spirit, she asked how this could be. Then she trusted the answer. Her faith did not remove every question. It gave her the courage to walk forward with God anyway. Each Hail Mary begins with the greeting of the Angel and the praise of Elizabeth. In this way, the Rosary invites us to pray with the same faith that Mary showed. We also face moments when God’s plan feels unclear. Faith asks us to keep trusting, keep praying and keep following Christ. Through Mary’s intercession, may our faith grow deeper and steadier.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, Mother of believers, you trusted the word of God with your whole heart. Strengthen our faith when we feel uncertain or afraid. Help us to believe that God keeps His promises, and lead us always to your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father
Three Hail Marys
Glory be to the Father
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Third Day — Obedience
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” — Luke 1:38
Reflection
Mary’s yes changed history. She did not know every step of the journey, yet she gave herself fully to God. Her obedience was free and loving. It came from trust, not fear. This same attitude appears throughout the mysteries of the Rosary. Mary presents Jesus in the Temple, searches for Him in Jerusalem and follows Him to Calvary. Obedience is rarely easy for us. We often prefer our own plans. Yet God’s will leads to true peace. Through Mary’s intercession, may we listen more carefully and respond more generously.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, obedient Mother of the Lord, you said yes to God with a willing heart. Help us to listen to His voice each day. Give us the courage to follow His will, even when it is difficult, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father…
Three Hail Marys
Glory be to the Father…
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Fourth Day — Purity
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.” — Matthew 5:8
Reflection
The Church honours Mary as the Immaculate Virgin, wholly devoted to God. Her purity was not cold or distant. It was a life of undivided love. Mary kept her heart open to God alone. Because of this, she could receive His Son with joy. When we pray the Rosary, we ask Mary to help us look at Jesus with a clean heart. Every decade invites us to set aside distractions and focus on Christ. Purity also touches our thoughts, words and actions. It helps us love others honestly and respect them as children of God. Through Mary’s intercession, may our hearts become simple, honest and open to Him.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, Virgin most pure, help us to love God with an undivided heart. Cleanse our thoughts, guard our actions and renew our desire for holiness. Lead us to your Son, that we may see Him more clearly each day. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father…
Three Hail Marys
Glory be to the Father…
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Fifth Day — Charity
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“During those days Mary set out and travelled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah.” — Luke 1:39
Reflection
Soon after the Annunciation, Mary went to help her cousin Elizabeth. She did not wait to be asked. She saw a need and acted with love. The Visitation shows charity in motion. Mary carried Christ within her, and her first act was service. The Rosary keeps this scene before us. When we pray the second Joyful Mystery, we learn that love for God always leads to love for others. Charity can be simple. A visit, a phone call, a kind word or a quiet act of help can bring Christ to someone’s door. Through Mary’s intercession, may we serve our neighbours with joy.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, Mother of charity, you went in haste to serve those in need. Open our eyes to the people around us. Make our love practical, patient and generous, so that others may meet Jesus through us. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father…
Three Hail Marys
Glory be to the Father…
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Sixth Day — Perseverance
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.” — John 19:25
Reflection
Mary remained faithful from Bethlehem to Calvary. She stayed beside her Son when others fled and she did not lose hope in God. Her perseverance was quiet and steady. She kept loving, kept trusting and kept praying through sorrow. The Sorrowful Mysteries help us walk this road with her. In them, we see that faith does not remove suffering, but it gives suffering meaning in Christ. We all meet trials that tempt us to give up. Prayer, especially the Rosary, helps us hold on. Through Mary’s intercession, may we remain faithful to the end.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, Mother who stood beside the cross, stay close to us in every trial. Give us strength when we feel weak, and patience when answers seem slow. Help us to persevere in faith, hope and love until we reach your Son. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father…
Three Hail Marys
Glory be to the Father…
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Seventh Day — Trust in God
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“Nothing will be impossible for God.” — Luke 1:37
Reflection
Mary placed her whole future in God’s hands. She accepted a mission she could not fully explain and she trusted Him with the unknown. The Gospel also tells us that she treasured events in her heart and reflected on them. Her trust grew through prayer and quiet attention to God. The Rosary teaches the same habit. So, decade by decade, we return to the story of Jesus and learn to rely on His care. Therefore, trust does not mean that life becomes easy. It means we are never alone. Through Mary’s intercession, may we hand our worries to God and walk forward in peace.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, Mother of trust, you relied on God in every season of your life. Calm our fears and quiet our anxious heart. Teach us to place our family, our future and our needs in His loving hands. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father…
Three Hail Marys
Glory be to the Father…
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Eighth Day — Compassion
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“They have no wine.” — John 2:3
Reflection
At the wedding in Cana, Mary noticed a quiet problem. The hosts were about to face embarrassment, so she brought the need to Jesus. Then she told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Her compassion always points to Christ. This is how Catholics understand Mary’s intercession. She does not replace her Son. She carries our needs to Him. In the Rosary, we bring our own struggles, and those of others, to Mary. She listens as a mother and leads us to Jesus. Therefore, through Mary’s intercession, may our hearts grow gentler towards everyone who suffers.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, compassionate Mother, you notice every need. Carry our petitions to your Son and soften our hearts towards those who suffer. Help us to comfort others as you comforts us and to trust in the mercy of Jesus. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father…
Three Hail Marys
Glory be to the Father…
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Ninth Day — Love and Devotion to Christ
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Scripture
“All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women and Mary the mother of Jesus.” — Acts 1:14
Reflection
Mary’s whole life points to Jesus. She carried Him, raised Him, followed Him and prayed with His disciples after the Ascension. Even after Easter, she did not step away from prayer. She remained with the Church, waiting for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we complete this novena with the same spirit. Perseverance in prayer deepens our love for Christ and love for Christ makes us want to pray. The Rosary can become a daily companion on this path, coupled with a few quiet minutes with Mary can renew our attention to the Gospel. Through Mary’s intercession, may we keep loving Jesus above all things.
Let Us Pray
Our Lady of the Rosary, Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Church, draw us ever closer to your Son. Help us to pray each day, to love Him faithfully and to remain devoted to the Holy Rosary. May our whole life glorify God. Amen.
Intention
Pause and present your prayer intention to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our Father…
Three Hail Marys
Glory be to the Father…
Closing Prayer of the Novena
Lord God, we thank you for these nine days of prayer. Through the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, bless our families, strengthen our faith and grant peace to our troubled world. Keep us faithful in prayer and devoted to your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
About the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
The feast and Lepanto. On October 7, 1571, the naval fleet of the Holy League defeated the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Lepanto. Because Pope Saint Pius V had asked Christians to pray the Rosary for the campaign, he therefore credited the victory to Our Lady’s help and established a yearly feast. So in 1573, Pope Gregory XIII renamed it the feast of the Holy Rosary. In 1716, Pope Clement XI extended it to the universal Church. Pope Saint Pius X later fixed it on October 7 and today the Church keeps it as a memorial.
Why October? Because Pope Leo XIII wrote many documents encouraging the Rosary and he urged the faithful to pray it throughout October. As a result, the month became closely linked with the devotion. He also added the title “Queen of the Most Holy Rosary” to the Litany of Loreto. Later, Pope Saint John Paul II wrote Rosarium Virginis Mariae in 2002 and introduced the Luminous Mysteries.
Tradition and teaching. A later devotional tradition says that Mary gave the Rosary to Saint Dominic. Though, Historians cannot confirm this, and the Church does not require belief in it. But the Church clearly teaches is that the Rosary is a Gospel-centred prayer, rooted in the life of Christ.
Related Marian titles. Our Lady of the Rosary is the same Blessed Virgin honoured under many titles, such as Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of Victory. Each title points to a different aspect of her care for the Church. Therefore, none replaces her Son.
The four sets of mysteries. The Joyful Mysteries cover the Annunciation to the finding of Jesus in the Temple. The Luminous Mysteries recall His public ministry. The Sorrowful Mysteries follow His Passion and death. The Glorious Mysteries celebrate the Resurrection, the Ascension, the descent of the Holy Spirit, and Mary’s Assumption and Coronation.
How to pray the Rosary. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, the Apostles’ Creed and then, one Our Father. Then pray three Hail Marys and one Glory Be. Next, announce the first mystery and pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys and one Glory Be for each decade. Close with the Hail Holy Queen and the concluding prayer.
After the Novena. Choose one set of mysteries for each day of the week, or pray one decade daily. Invite your family to join you. Keep a simple intention list, and return to the Gospel passages behind each mystery.
