World Mission Sunday 2026 Marks One Hundred Years of Mission
The Catholic Church celebrates World Mission Sunday 2026 on October 18, 2026. On the same date, the Church also remembers the Feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist. However, the Sunday liturgy takes precedence in the calendar. Moreover, this year carries special weight because Catholics mark the hundredth observance of the day. Therefore, parishes across the globe prepare to pray, learn and give.
Pope Leo XIV chose the theme “One in Christ, united in mission” for this centenary. Indeed, the phrase echoes his episcopal motto, “In Illo uno unum”, which means “In the One, we are one.” The Vatican announced the theme on October 31, 2025. Furthermore, the Dicastery for Evangelisation explained that the words highlight the unity of believers. This unity rests on the bond between Christ and the Father. As a result, it leads naturally to a shared mission of evangelisation.
The Vatican released the Holy Father’s message on January 25, 2026. That date is the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, the great Apostle to the Gentiles. In the message, Pope Leo XIV teaches that union with Christ lies at the heart of mission. Likewise, he warns that conflict, polarisation and mistrust can weaken the Church’s witness, even within communities. Therefore, he urges disciples to seek reconciliation first. Moreover, he stresses that unity serves mission rather than standing as a goal in itself.
In addition, the Pope reminds the faithful that no baptised person is exempt from mission. Each believer takes part according to their own vocation and state of life. He also describes the Gospel as the story of God’s faithful love, which took flesh in Jesus Christ. Consequently, he says the world still needs courageous witnesses, and communities still need new missionary vocations. Finally, he thanks the Pontifical Mission Societies, whose work he experienced with gratitude during his years in Peru.
The history of this day begins in 1926. Pope Pius XI instituted World Mission Sunday after a proposal from the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. His goal was clear. He wanted Catholics everywhere to share responsibility for the Church’s missionary work. In the same year, he issued the encyclical Rerum Ecclesiae, which asked missionaries to excel in charity, patience and humility. Since then, the Church has observed the day every year. Meanwhile, the offerings gathered are distributed on behalf of the Pope to meet missionary needs.
Pope Leo XIV also links this anniversary to other milestones. For example, he recalls the motto of Blessed Paolo Manna, who founded the Pontifical Missionary Union. That union was established in 1916, so it celebrates its one 110th anniversary this year. Likewise, the Pope refers to the Jubilee of the Missionary World on October 5, 2025. On that occasion, he spoke of a new missionary age for the Church. Thus, the centenary looks both backwards and forwards.
Moreover, the Holy Father knows mission from personal experience. He served as an Augustinian missionary priest in Peru from 1985 to 1999. Later, he worked as apostolic administrator and then bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023. During that time, he saw how faith, prayer and generosity on this day can transform whole communities. Then, on May 8, 2025, the world met him as the new Pope. Consequently, this message is his first for World Mission Sunday.
Next comes the prayer, which closes the papal message. It begins, “Holy Father, make us one in Christ, rooted in his love that unites and renews.” Afterwards, the Pope asks that every member of the Church unite in mission. He prays that believers stay docile to the Holy Spirit and courageous in their witness. Furthermore, he asks that they proclaim God’s faithful love to every creature, every day. Finally, he entrusts the task to Mary, Queen of Missions, and prays that the faithful become instruments of peace.
So how can Catholics take part? First, pray the papal prayer at home, in your parish or with your family. Second, learn about missionary dioceses and the people who serve in them. Third, give generously through your parish collection, because these gifts reach the poorest communities. In addition, you can read the full message on the Fides news agency. You can also explore the resources of Catholic Mission Australia and the Pontifical Mission Societies.
In conclusion, World Mission Sunday 2026 invites every Catholic to unite in prayer and action. The theme reminds us that unity in Christ gives mission its strength. Likewise, the history shows how a single proposal grew into a worldwide act of solidarity. Therefore, let us pray, give and bear witness together. In this way, the Gospel of God’s love can reach every corner of the earth.
