Why Pope Leo XIV Prays for Mental Health Ministry This October
Pope Leo XIV has dedicated his October prayer intention to mental health ministry. Moreover, World Mental Health Day falls on October 10, so the timing feels especially fitting. He asks the Church to listen without judging and to accompany those who suffer without excluding them. In addition, he wants every community to become a place of welcome. Therefore, this intention speaks to families, parishes and individuals alike.
The official intention asks Catholics to pray that mental health ministry be established throughout the Church. Furthermore, it asks that this ministry help overcome stigma and discrimination against people with mental illness. The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network released the intention on October 1, 2026. Meanwhile, it also shared a video called “Pray with the Pope.” In it, Pope Leo speaks directly and prays aloud.
In the video, the Pope holds an image of Saint Dymphna, patroness of people with mental disorders and of mental health professionals. Then he turns to the Lord, who knows the deepest parts of our hearts. He speaks of the silent wounds that sometimes no one sees. As a result, the prayer feels personal and gentle. Likewise, it places those who suffer at the centre of the Church’s attention.
The Pope prays that the Church will become an “open house” where people facing mental health challenges find welcome, dignity and hope. He also prays for brothers and sisters who suffer alone with anxiety, depression or other mental illness. Moreover, he asks forgiveness for the times Christians looked away. He admits that such neglect has added to stigma and discrimination.
Then he invites the whole Church to pray throughout the month. This prayer includes those who struggle and those who accompany them. Consequently, caregivers, relatives and friends all have a place in the intention. Furthermore, he calls the ministry urgent and increasingly needed. He notes that tensions grow in the world, and so does the number of people in crisis.
The numbers explain this urgency. According to World Health Organization data presented in September 2025, more than one billion people live with a mental disorder. However, public spending on mental health reaches barely two per cent of health budgets. In addition, Father Cristóbal Fones, a Jesuit who leads the Prayer Network, notes that many people cannot speak about their illness. Others meet judgment and misunderstanding when they try.
Stigma keeps many people silent. Silence, in turn, deepens loneliness. Therefore, a welcoming community can make a real difference. The Church has a long tradition of caring for the sick and the weary. Thus, mental health ministry belongs naturally to her mission. Above all, it offers presence, patience and a listening heart.
The Pope also offers an original prayer for this month. It begins with the words “God of life.” Then he asks God to build bridges of understanding and comfort. Next, he asks for strength and compassion for those who support others. Finally, he asks the Holy Spirit to help communities welcome care for mental health into their life and ministry. In this way, the Church becomes a living sign of a mercy that “never abandons and always restores.”
Parishes can respond in practical ways. First, they can train volunteers to listen without judgement. Next, they can offer quiet prayer groups for families and caregivers. Then they can share contact details for trusted professional help. In addition, priests can speak openly about mental illness in homilies. Finally, every believer can pray the Rosary this month for those who suffer. Prayer supports but never replaces professional care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please contact local emergency services or a trusted professional.
October is also the month of the Holy Rosary, so many Catholics already pray daily. Therefore, you can offer one decade each day for this intention.
