What Is the Five First Saturday Devotion?
The Five First Saturday devotion is a Catholic practice requested by Our Lady of Fatima in 1917. On the first Saturday of five consecutive months, the faithful are asked to:
- Go to Confession (within eight days before or after)
- Receive Holy Communion in a state of grace
- Pray five decades of the Rosary
- Meditate for fifteen minutes on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Our Lady promised that those who fulfill these conditions would receive the grace of final perseverance and the assurance that her Immaculate Heart would triumph.
Why the Five First Saturday?
Our Lady appeared to the three shepherd children at Fatima on the 13th of each month from May to October 1917. Later, in 1925 and 1929, she appeared to Sister Lúcia with specific requests for reparation, including the Five First Saturdays. She explained that many souls are lost because there is no one to pray and make sacrifices for them. The Five First Saturday devotion is our response to that plea.
The five Saturdays correspond to five types of offenses against Mary’s Immaculate Heart:
- Attacks on her Immaculate Conception
- Attacks on her perpetual virginity
- Attacks on her divine maternity and the refusal to accept her as Mother of all peoples
- The implanting in children’s hearts of indifference, contempt, and even hatred toward her
- Direct insults against her sacred images
How to Observe the First Saturday Devotion Today
Step 1: Prepare with Confession
If you are not in a state of grace, go to Confession. If you already are, you may receive Communion and confess later within the eight-day window.
Step 2: Attend Mass and Receive Communion
The Communion must be offered in reparation to the Immaculate Heart. Make this intention explicitly before receiving.
Step 3: Pray the Rosary
Five full decades, meditating on the mysteries. The meditation is the heart of the devotion—not rushed, not mechanical, but attentive.
Step 4: Fifteen Minutes of Meditation
This can be done alongside the Rosary or separately. Focus on one or more mysteries, placing yourself in the scene, asking Mary to reveal what she pondered in her heart.
First Saturday Devotion Prayer
O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, you appeared at Fatima and revealed the glory of your Immaculate Heart to three shepherd children. You asked for reparation and promised grace to those who observe the First Saturdays.
I come today to fulfill your request. I offer this Communion, this Rosary, and this meditation in reparation for the offenses committed against your Immaculate Heart. Receive my poor efforts, multiply them through your intercession, and lead me closer to your Son, Jesus Christ.
Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us. Immaculate Heart of Mary, triumph in our hearts and in the world.
Why This Devotion Matters Now
The world Our Lady warned about at Fatima has not disappeared. Indifference to faith, contempt for sacred things, and hostility toward the Church have grown, not diminished. The First Saturday devotion is not a relic of the past. It is a spiritual weapon for the present.
By observing it, you join millions of Catholics across the world who have made this reparation. You stand with the shepherd children who heard Mary’s voice. You participate in the promise that her Immaculate Heart will triumph—and that triumph begins in individual hearts, one First Saturday at a time.
Start Today
If you have never observed the First Saturday devotion, begin today. If you began and stopped, return. If you are faithful, persevere. The grace of final perseverance is not a small promise. It is the assurance that Mary will be with you at the hour of death, as she was with her Son on the Cross, and that she will lead you to the glory of heaven.
Will you answer Our Lady’s call?
