Feast Day – April 24

Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen (1577–1622) was a German priest and martyr of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, remembered for his fearless defense of the Catholic faith during the Counter-Reformation. Born Mark Rey in Sigmaringen, Germany, he studied law and philosophy at the University of Freiburg, later becoming a respected lawyer known as the “poor man’s advocate” for his justice and compassion toward the needy.

After years of legal practice and travels across Europe as a tutor, he renounced his career to pursue religious life. In 1612, he joined the Capuchins, taking the name Fidelis—meaning “faithful.” Ordained a priest, he quickly became known for his powerful preaching, strict discipline, and deep charity, especially during times of illness when he cared for the sick and soldiers.

Fidelis was sent as a missionary to the region of Graubünden in Switzerland, where he worked to strengthen Catholics and bring others back to the faith. His success, however, stirred hostility among local Calvinists, who accused him of political motives and threatened his life. Fully aware of the danger, he prepared himself for martyrdom.

On April 24, 1622, after preaching with great zeal, Fidelis was attacked by armed opponents near Seewis. Refusing to renounce his faith, he was beaten and fatally wounded. As he died, he prayed for his attackers, entrusting himself to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. His martyrdom became a powerful witness, even leading to the conversion of some involved in his death.

Six months later, his body was found incorrupt, further strengthening devotion to him. He was canonized in 1746 by Pope Benedict XIV. Today, Saint Fidelis is honored as a model of courage, fidelity, and missionary zeal.

His feast day is celebrated on April 24.
