A statue of Saint Padre Pio at Santa Maria delle Grazie parish in Casalba, Italy, has become the focus of international attention after parishioners discovered what appeared to be a tear of blood trickling from the saint’s left eye. Consequently, the local bishop has launched a formal investigation under the Vatican’s 2024 norms for alleged supernatural phenomena. Furthermore, the case has reignited debate about how the Church discerns signs that draw believers yet demands rigorous verification.

Saint Padre Pio Statue Weeps Blood in Italian Parish: Vatican Investigation Underway

The discovery occurred in April 2026, when a parishioner noticed an unusual reddish mark on the face of the fiberglass statue, which has stood at the church entrance for two decades. Meanwhile, Father Girolamo Capuano, the parish priest, rushed to verify the report. Nevertheless, his attempts to clean the stain proved unsuccessful. Therefore, he ordered the statue removed for scientific examination while simultaneously reviewing over a decade of security footage.

What the Parish Priest Found

Father Capuano’s investigation yielded striking preliminary findings. First, he reviewed security camera recordings spanning from April 1 to April 30, 2026. Second, he confirmed that no individual approached the statue during daylight or nighttime hours. Third, he observed that the reddish tear followed a path so precise that, in his words, “not even a painter like Michelangelo could reproduce something like it.”

Moreover, the priest emphasized that his decision to publicize the phenomenon stemmed from pastoral responsibility rather than any desire for popularity. He told Mediaset Italia’s program Mattino Cinque that such signs are “given to all so that they may be shared with prudence, love, and discernment.” Additionally, he noted that many people “begin a journey of faith” through these experiences.

The statue itself is constructed of fiberglass, which complicates straightforward explanations. Natural resin discoloration or environmental moisture would typically behave differently than the observed phenomenon. Therefore, laboratory analysis must determine whether the substance contains hemoglobin or another organic or chemical component.

The Vatican’s 2024 Norms: How Investigations Proceed

This case falls under the Vatican’s Norms for Proceeding in the Discernment of Alleged Supernatural Phenomena, published in 2024. Consequently, Bishop Pietro Lagnese of the Diocese of Capua must lead the preliminary investigation. Furthermore, he must collaborate with the Italian Bishops’ Conference and operate under the supervision of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF).

The process unfolds in several stages. Initially, the diocesan bishop gathers evidence, including scientific analysis of the substance, witness testimony, and expert evaluation. Subsequently, he submits findings to the DDF, which reviews both the material and the procedural methodology. Finally, the dicastery issues a definitive judgment.

Crucially, the norms stipulate that until the DDF completes its review, the bishop “will refrain from any public declaration regarding the authenticity or supernaturality of these phenomena.” This provision aims to prevent premature claims that could mislead the faithful or damage the Church’s credibility.

Historical Context: Casalba and Alleged Phenomena

The town of Casalba has experienced similar claims before. In 2015, reports circulated of an image of the Virgin Mary weeping in the same locality. However, investigations concluded that rainwater seepage caused the apparent tears. Therefore, local authorities and Vatican officials approach the current Padre Pio case with appropriate caution.

Saint Padre Pio himself, the Capuchin friar from Pietrelcina (1887–1968), was no stranger to extraordinary phenomena. During his lifetime, he bore the stigmata for fifty years, experienced bilocation, and was reportedly gifted with reading souls. Nevertheless, the Church subjected these claims to decades of scrutiny before his canonization in 2002. His case exemplifies the Vatican’s insistence that supernatural claims require time, evidence, and patience.

Reactions and Pastoral Implications

Father Capuano has struck a careful balance between personal conviction and institutional prudence. He stated that the security footage “reinforces my personal conviction and my faith in Padre Pio.” Yet he simultaneously urged the faithful to await definitive verification.

For the global Catholic community, this case raises familiar questions. Do alleged signs strengthen faith or exploit it? How should believers respond when science and devotion intersect? The Church’s answer, articulated in the 2024 norms, emphasizes discernment without dismissal and respect without credulity.

The St. Pio Foundation in the United States, which released historical photographs of Padre Pio in 2024, has not yet commented on the Casalba phenomenon. However, the foundation’s mission of promoting the saint’s legacy ensures that any verified sign associated with him would attract significant international attention.

Conclusion: Faith, Prudence, and the Patience of the Church

The Casalba statue invites Catholics to contemplate the mystery of Saint Padre Pio’s enduring spiritual presence. Whether the reddish tear proves to be a miraculous sign, a natural anomaly, or something yet unexplained, the Church’s response demonstrates its commitment to both faith and reason.

As Father Capuano insists, no investigation can “take our faith away from us.” Yet the Church’s rigorous protocols remind believers that authentic faith does not require every claim to be true—only that every claim be tested with honesty and humility.
