Feast Day – April 23

Patron Saint of England and Catalonia

Saint George is one of the most venerated martyrs in Christianity, though many details of his early life remain uncertain. He is believed to have died on April 23, 303 A.D. during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. Born to Christian parents of noble background—his father a Roman officer and his mother from Lydda—George was raised in the faith and later joined the Roman Army, eventually serving as an imperial guard.

When a decree ordered all soldiers to sacrifice to Roman gods, George refused and openly professed his Christian faith. Despite offers of wealth and power, he remained steadfast. He endured severe torture but did not renounce Christ. Finally, he was executed by beheading in Nicomedia, becoming a martyr whose courage inspired many conversions. His body was taken to Lydda (modern-day Lod), where he has been honoured ever since.

Though historical details are limited, devotion to Saint George spread rapidly across both East and West. He was canonized by Pope Gelasius I, who acknowledged that while his deeds are not fully known, his name is rightly revered among the saints.

One of the most famous traditions associated with him is the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. According to this account, a town was terrorized by a Dragon demanding daily sacrifices. When a Princess was chosen as its next victim, George intervened, defeated the Dragon, and led the people to embrace Christianity. This story symbolizes the triumph of faith over evil and became central to his global devotion.

Saint George is honoured as the patron saint of England and Catalonia, and he is uniquely revered by both Christians and Muslims. His feast day is celebrated on April 23, though it may be transferred depending on the liturgical calendar.
